Embracing “Lasts” and the Power of Prioritizing Health Over 50

LASTS

Have you ever stopped to think about your “lasts”

You know, those moments in life when you realize you’re doing something for the last time. Some of these we expect and even prepare for.  Like the last day of school before summer.  Or when we sold our first home, I remember saying to my boys “this is the last time we’ll pull out of the garage to this house”.

Yet there are several “lasts” that go by without celebration.  Like the last time you effortlessly ran down the street, the last time you rode a bike, or the last time you jumped for any reason. As we age, these “lasts” become more frequent, and sometimes, we accept them as a natural part of getting older.  I often think when I will play my last basketball game (my league team must won the championship 😂😂)

But here’s the thing: just because we accept them now doesn’t mean we have to stay that way permanently. Sure, there may come a time when certain activities no longer seem worth the risk, but that doesn’t mean we have to give up on the joy they once brought us. Instead, it’s about finding new ways to experience that joy while prioritizing our health and well-being.

Think about it. When was the last time you felt truly alive, truly free in your body? Maybe it’s been a while, and that’s okay. Life has a way of keeping us busy, and sometimes, our health takes a backseat to other priorities. But as we age, it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to our bodies and prioritize our health so we can “keep the old man out” (a famous saying by Clint Eastwood when asked how he stays healthy).

You see, getting older doesn’t mean resigning ourselves to a life of limitations. On the contrary, it’s an opportunity to embrace the power of healthy living and push back against those “lasts” that try to hold us back. By staying active, eating well, and taking care of our bodies, we give ourselves the best chance to not only delay the onset of those “lasts” but also to continue enjoying our health and vitality for years to come.

So, how do we do it? How do we defy the odds and keep those “lasts” at bay? It starts with a commitment to ourselves, a commitment to prioritize our health above all else. It means making time for exercise, even when life gets busy. It means choosing nutritious foods that fuel our bodies and minds. And it means seeking out the support and guidance we need to stay on track, whether that’s from friends, family, or healthcare professionals.

Sure, it might require some effort. It might require stepping out of our comfort zones and trying new things. But isn’t our health worth it? Isn’t the freedom to live our lives to the fullest worth the occasional discomfort or inconvenience? I think so!

As you reflect on your own “lasts” and consider what they mean for your future, I encourage you to think about the power of prioritizing your health. Remember, you have the ability to rewrite your story, to defy the odds, and to continue enjoying a life filled with vitality and joy. All it takes is a willingness to take that first step to “keep the old man out.”

Here’s to embracing our “lasts” and prioritizing our health above all else.
