3 Common Mistakes That Make Your Knee Pain Worse

There are lots of things that you can do to relieve knee pain, but it’s also important to identify the mistakes you are doing (often on a daily basis) which make your knee pain worse.

At our clinic in Glendale and Peoria, many people visit us with knee pain, and these are 3 of the most common mistakes that they are making that cause knee pain, make it more painful, and stop it from going away.

Not Exercising

If you’ve got really sore knees, you may be tempted to think that exercise should be avoided and that this will give your body a chance to recover.

However, exercising is beneficial in nearly all cases – even if you suffer from very severe knee pain.

While you might not be able to go for a 30-minute run like you could in your younger days, or you may struggle to perform a full squat due to stiffness in your knee joint, there will be some form of exercise that is realistic for you to do.

And exercising – even low-impact, low-intensity activities like walking, the stationary bike, or swimming can make a big difference to the mobility in your knee.

The increased circulation can also help speed up recovery, and the movement also helps you get rid of that stiff, uncomfortable feeling that you’re tired of experiencing.

So, not exercising is the first mistake we see knee pain sufferers make.

Just remember, that you need to pick the right exercise, in the right amounts.

Wearing The Wrong Footwear

Improper or worn-out footwear that doesn’t support your feet can have a nasty knock-on effect further up the body – into your knee, hips, and lower back.

So if you aren’t wearing the correct footwear, you may find your knee pain won’t go away.

By choosing the right footwear, you can support your foot arch, as well as cushion and support your feet and ankles as you move throughout the day.

This is the second mistake that we often see from knee pain sufferers, and is a relatively quick and easy fix that can make a huge difference.

Sitting For Too Long

The final mistake that can lead to more frequent, and severe knee pain is sitting too long.

Similar to the “no exercising” approach, this is born from the standard, but poor advice of resting to fix knee pain.

Sitting may provide some relief from knee pain, but as soon as you have to get up, the pain quickly returns.

And over time, sitting for too long leads to the weakening of certain areas, and tightening of other areas which creates more problems – and not just for your knees either!

If you sit as part of your job, try your best to incorporate as much movement as possible, whether that’s a little stretching in your chair, or getting up every 30 minutes to walk a little.

It’s also important to remember this…

Even if you sit in a “good posture”, staying in any position for too long is not ideal.

So don’t think that excessive sitting is counteracted by your attempt to keep a perfect posture.
