Duane’s Story
How long did you wait before deciding to seek out a physical therapist?
Probably about a week.
Why did you feel as though you had to wait that long? As in, what was the obstacle in coming to physical therapy?
Going to the doctor first to see what was wrong.
What was and how bad was your problem prior to physical therapy?
It was the L4 and LS vertebrae and the doctor said I had a herniated disc. I’ve had this problem throughout the years and each episode gets worse. I had been working all day in the yard and I picked something up that I shouldn’t have. It was pretty much over after that.
Did you try anything else that didn’t work?
The doctor gave me a muscle relaxer and I was icing on and off and it just wasn’t helping. In fact, the muscle relaxer had no effect on me.
What would you say to someone who was hesitant on getting physical therapy?
I’d bring them here. I’ve been here for both shoulders and actually, years ago I had Nick’s father work on my back.
What did you enjoy the most about coming to Preferred PT?
Wow, that’s hard because so many things have been great. I think the fact that they listen to you. Nick was giving me goals. He would say, “O.K. now at this point, what would you like to accomplish?”, so we were taking it one step at a time and that was helpful. And of course they were always careful not to go too far and it was encouraging.
What were you hoping to achieve and did we help you to achieve it?
Initially I was bound to a seat; I couldn’t get up and I couldn’t drive. And this was the first question Nick ever asked me and my answer was freedom. Freedom to move, freedom to drive, that was the main thing. I believe I have recovered as much as I could, back to where I was before.
What to Watch Out For:
• Bending
• Rising from a seat position
• Reaching out in front
• Swimming
• Applying heat
• Icing
