Shoulder tension may result from sitting at a desk, overuse, stress, and sleeping in an incorrect position. We tend to hold a lot of stress in our shoulders and in return hunch over or make a lot of postural changes throughout the day. In this article, you will find out if your shoulders affect your posture, and how to release shoulder tension.

Do my Shoulders Affect my Posture?

Shoulder and back muscles affect the position of your spine. Changes in posture may affect the way your body moves, for example, positioning of the shoulder blade, and how well the muscles work together. Making sure you’re aware of your posture is one of the most beneficial things you can do to improve your posture and improve your shoulder tension. Taking breaks throughout your day to do simple shoulder exercises to help them be active is beneficial as well.

One Exercise you can perform is called Bird dogs. This exercise is very beneficial for core stability and shoulder mobility. To perform this exercise you start on your hands and knees, then take the opposite arm and leg and stretch it straight out not up, and then bring it back down and do it for the other side. When performing this exercise keep your head aligned with your back and keep the trunk of your body still while moving your arms and legs.

You do not want your whole body to be swaying from side to side, keep yourself nice and centered to receive the best benefits from this exercise. But remember to keep your core engaged and your hips rotated in towards your belly button. Complete this exercise by doing 3 sets of 10.

A second stretch you could perform anywhere in the doorway stretch. This stretch will help to stretch the rotator cuff muscles along with the front portion of the shoulder or the anterior deltoid. All you have to do is have both hands and elbows on the outside of the doorway frame, keeping your arms bent at 90 degrees with palms facing forward on the wall.

Slowly step forward with one foot slowly, feeling the stretch within your shoulders and chest. Stand straight and don’t lean forward when completing this exercise. Hold for 30 seconds or less if you’re in pain and repeat for 3 times.
